Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the evidence of songs as cited in various other literature. The chapter has three functions. The first is to lay out the different kinds of information derived from literary sources and citations. The second is to list the items quoted in light of the latest research. The third is to provide a context for examining and evaluating the most complicated and potentially informative of these bodies of citations, those in the poetry of Jean Molinet. Among the examples examined are: the Condamnacion de bancquet, using the song citations as evidence of the play’s date and authorship; the quodlibet-ballade Mon seul plaisir as a bizarre example of citation practice; the Spanish poem En Ávila por la A as evidence towards a chronology of the Spanish song repertory; and song citations in the poetry of Jean Molinet as evidence of many details but particularly the continued popularity of Binchois in the late years of the century.
