Abstract

Abstract The chapter begins with the three musical quodlibets in the Glogauer Liederbuch, showing how two of them quote from distinct parts of the German song repertory and the third hints at a portion of the German repertory that is otherwise lost. Various other kinds of citation are enumerated. Then discussion moves to musical citations as evidence of otherwise unknown readings in songs, with the conclusion that any serious edition of a song must take account of its appearance in mass cycles or motets in a way that no known edition has yet done. Prime case here are the two masses carminum of Obrecht and the song Cela sans plus of Colinet de Lannoys.
