Abstract
Abstract The effect of changed biographical views on Ciconia and Josquin is easy to see. The redating of the Old Hall manuscript may seem tiny in comparison, but it has enormous resonance in related repertories. The identification of Johannes Martini as the main copyist of the Casanatense chansonnier has emerged only slowly over the last five decades, but it has a massive importance on our view of the manuscript and its date. The chapter ends with a reconsideration of the dates of the ‘central’ chansonniers of French song, taking account of what we know about Hayne van Ghizeghem, Basiron, and Busnoys.
