Ballade
Abstract
Abstract This chapter follows the poetic form, together with the prince or envoi. It looks at the earliest settings, together with those in the Cyprus manuscript; the ballade in Binchois and Dufay; later Continental ballades, especially of Ockeghem and Puyllois; the English ballades with special reference to Walter Frye’s Ave regina celorum and the evidence that it began life as an English ballade; the rustic ballade, with special reference to Binchois’ Filles a marier; and the German ballade or Barform, and its relatively slow growth in the fifteenth century. Other names mentioned are Vitry, Machaut, Villon, Baudet Harenc, Egidius de Murino, Eustace Deschamps, Oswald von Wolkenstein, and Adam von Fulda.
