Latin
Abstract
Abstract That there is only one setting of Horace from these years and none at all of Vergil must be accounted an accident of the sources: after 1500 there are enormous numbers of settings of Vergil and Horace. Most of the apparently Latin songs are contrafacta, though their originals have not always been found. Brief focus is cast on Ludvicus de Arimino’s Salve cara Deo tellus, setting Petrarca’s famous greeting to Italy. The chapter ends with a consideration of Ad primum morsum, the only texted song in the Buxheim manuscript, with a text made famous by its six-voice setting in the last motet publication of Lassus.
