Abstract

Abstract Although no Spanish songbook is known from the years covered by this book it is possible to present a fairly convincing chronology of about ninety Spanish songs from these years. And there is evidence of quite a lot more. But there is also plenty of (mostly indirect) evidence for the knowledge of French and Italian songs in Spain. Beyond that, it is possible to assemble quite a few details of the Portuguese royal court repertory, which again included much Spanish song alongside a fair quantity of French and Italian song, demonstrating that certain pieces were known all the way from Poland to Portugal. The chapter ends with a brief description of the three known songs of Johannes Wreede, as examples of the very best in fifteenth-century song.
