Abstract

Abstract This chapter describes the plan of the book and argues for the relevance of a new edition by providing a number of recent illustrations of how the problematic assumption that the category “religion” names some prior item of deep and obvious meaning—one that cannot be explained to be a result of any mundane operations or structures—continues to animate, and thereby limit, scholarly work in the field.
