Abstract

Abstract Extending the broader argument of Chapter 1, this chapter explicitly connects the claim of religion being unique to arguments for the need of special tools for its study as well as autonomous institutional settings in which they’re used, making plain how the sui generis claim has practical links not only to issues of identity, authority, and institutional legitimacy but also to a reactionary politics.
