The Debate on the Autonomy of Eliade
Abstract
Abstract Shifting to the ongoing scholarly reception of Eliade’s academic work, and in particular the criticisms and responses concerning how his earlier far right politics did or did not impact his later scholarship, this chapter identifies the same strategies used in privileging religion as if it was unique also being used by Eliade’s defenders in these debates, portraying him as a naïve and apolitical or so-called non-virulent nationalist.
