Abstract

Abstract This chapter analyses the trajectory of utopian thought from the late nineteenth century to the present—the technopolitan age—emphasizing the pivotal role of technoscience and of science fiction in imagining alternative worlds. It suggests that transhumanism was the archetypal form of technopolitan utopianism. It also argues that in its dominant forms utopianism in the long twentieth century was marked by a dualistic structure: (e)utopia or annihilation.
