Abstract

Abstract The interview with the authors, conducted by the three series editors, explores some of the common ground shared by Bell and Mao but also highlights some of the key divergences and potential points of disagreement that emerge from their different methodological and disciplinary viewpoints. Questions explored in the interview include the social and political valences of utopia; the case for more modest, ‘good-enough’ utopias; utopias and partisanship; the relationship between scholarship and activism; the need to reckon with utopianism’s failure; the risks of thinking about utopia in narrowly ‘technological’ or solutionist terms; and challenges posed to utopianism by Black, Indigenous, and feminist writers.
