Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the role of solidarity in addressing the climate crisis, emphasizing the need to represent the interests of future generations and non-human entities in political decision-making. It critiques the limitations of current governance systems, which often fail to account for the long-term and interconnected impacts of climate policies. Drawing on the design principles of solidarity that the author developed in Chapter 2, as well as on the notion of relational representation, the chapter argues for institutional mechanisms that recognize the dignity and capacity of both humans and non-humans to contribute to arrangements of solidarity. It advocates for granting legal rights to non-human nature and embedding future generations’ representation in law to ensure their basic needs are safeguarded. Doing so, the chapter offers a solidarity-based perspective that complements climate justice, fostering coexistence and sustainable policy-making for a shared future.
