Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the transformative potential of economic democracy through the lens of solidarity. It argues for three key measures to create solidaristic societies: workplace democracy, a broader understanding of work, and a Universal Basic Income (UBI). Workplace democracy emphasizes co-ownership and participatory governance, challenging traditional hierarchies of corporate capitalism. A redefined concept of work includes all contributions to societal well-being, paid or unpaid, addressing systemic inequalities and recognizing undervalued labour. The chapter advocates for a solidaristic UBI as a foundation for economic security, ensuring dignity and autonomy for all people. By integrating these measures, the chapter envisions an economy centred on equality, justice, and collective well-being, thus embedding economic decision-making within democratic control. This approach challenges entrenched power asymmetries and reimagined economic life as a space of shared responsibility and solidarity.
