Abstract

Lecturer in History Research Associate Research Associate Without ignoring the differences between forced displacements and migration movements, I have deliberately decided to explore contemporary attitudes towards people on the move whether they are migrants or refugees. In this context, the terms ‘migrant’ and ‘refugee’ may appear interchangeably. I also used interchangeably the terms ‘populations transfer’, ‘population exchange’, and ‘population expulsion’ to describe the Asia Minor forced displacement. To describe ‘the land mass which comprises the major part of Asiatic Turkey today’, I used the term Asia Minor, which is ‘standard in Greek today, while Anatolia is not used’.1 The original language of both the conducted interviews and archival oral testimonies is Greek. All citations in this book are translated by the author in English, with the aim of preserving literalness, unless it is noted differently. Although there is ‘no standard way of transliterating Greek script’, words, family names, and place names are mostly referred to by their English spellings.2
