Abstract

Abstract This article examines why cloud computing remains strategically relevant in 2026 despite it being a mature technology that has been in place for over two decades. While cloud adoption is well-established across most sectors, many organizations still struggle to realize its full transformational potential, treating it as a technology upgrade rather than a business enabler. This significant gap between tactical adoption and strategic transformation is one of the key reasons why cloud adoption does not always translate into the expected business outcomes. The article traces cloud computing’s evolution from cost-saving infrastructure in the late 2000s to where it is today, as a critical foundational element for artificial intelligence and competitive advantage. Cloud’s key benefits are also explored, which include operational agility through instant scalability, enhanced business continuity, and being an enabler for innovation and emerging technologies. Key security and compliance aspects are also discussed, including the Shared Responsibility model. Critical implementation pitfalls are examined, including cost control failures from inadequate governance, data sovereignty challenges under regulations like General Data Protection Regulation and UK professional conduct rules, integration complexities with legacy systems, security misconfigurations, and widespread skills gaps. The article concludes with practical guidance emphasizing that successful cloud adoption requires treating it as strategic business transformation rather than technology deployment, with particular attention to organizational change management and regulatory compliance requirements.
