Landscapes
Abstract
Abstract The places Heaney writes about in his poetry are often described in critical shorthand as ciphers for experiences we think we know the dimensions of. This is true of the ‘north’ and the ‘Troubles’, neither of which gives any sense of the depth of place and association in the landscapes of Heaney’s writing. This chapter explores in detail the places that Heaney wrote about in his late collections, with a focus on their cultural topographies.
