Introduction to Part II
Abstract
Abstract Part II of the book examines how and why UN leadership, provisions for the inclusion of women in post-conflict society, and plural justice provisions can prevent conflict recurrence. It moves beyond the assumption of linear causal pathways connecting specific components of peace processes with the end of violence, and instead explores the complex, interactive, and context-specific relationships between these components and each conflict-affected society. We therefore employ congruence analysis to both illustrate and evaluate the relevance of a hypothesized relationship without a priori formulation of a linear causal mechanism. This section first presents congruence analysis as a method. Subsequently, it explains the process of selecting both typical and deviant case studies for Chapters 5, 6, and 7 through a combination of regression analysis on the Conditions of Recurrence Dataset, theoretical reflection, and extensive consultation with experts and practitioners. Finally, we present the sources and data for the congruence analysis.
