Abstract

Given the high prevalence of acne vulgaris and atrophic acne scars, particularly among adolescents and young adults, well-tolerated noninvasive treatments are needed. This randomized split-face clinical trial demonstrated the therapeutic potential of icariin, a flavonoid from the Epimedium species. Topical application of icariin significantly reduced acne and atrophic scar severity without adverse events by modulating acne-related pathophysiology, including inflammation and abnormal keratinization, while promoting extracellular matrix synthesis.
