Abstract

Abstract Tetra-3-pyridylmethane was synthesized via the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 3-fluoropyridine with tri-3-pyridylmethyl anion in 31% yield. Although a similar reaction of 2-cyano-5-fluoropyridine also gave tetra-3-pyridylmethane derivative under mild conditions, the reaction failed when 5-fluoro-2-nitropyridine was used. The diprotonated species of tetra-3-pyridylmethane, prepared by the addition of two equivalents of hydrochloric acid, was found to form a diamond-type network, constructed by intermolecular N–H···N hydrogen bonding.
