Abstract

The 5 yr we served as Editor-in-Chief (T.L.C.) and Deputy Editor-in-Chief (J.P.B.) of the JBMR were enormously rewarding and a high point of our professional careers. The perspective we gained by overseeing the JBMR was like no other. The editorial “baton” was passed to us by John Eisman, under whose diligent stewardship the JBMR achieved its highest-ever impact factor of 6.635, solidifying its place as the top journal in bone science. Our editorial duties quickly became a regular routine but enjoyable part of our day, thanks to the support of an outstanding group of Senior Associate and Associate Editors. At the same time, we faced a significant learning curve in keeping abreast of events that were transforming both the conduct and the dissemination of biomedical science. The widespread availability of powerful genetic, molecular, and imaging technologies was vastly accelerating the pace of discovery research and the translation of discoveries into novel therapies and improved clinical practice. In parallel, scientific publishing was shifting away from subscription-based print copy to digital online content and an increasing demand for open access. To meet the financial and operational challenges associated with these changes, the JBMR required a new business model, which was developed through a publishing contract negotiated with Wiley. These were indeed challenging but exciting times for us, for the JBMR, and for the field of bone science.
