Abstract

Abstract Introduction/Objective Compassion-focused ACT integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT). Although there is growing evidence of its efficacy across various clinical conditions, its application to female sexual dysfunctions (FSDs) remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to map its applicability in treating FSDs in Brazil. Materials and Methods The review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Eligible studies addressed FSDs in connection with compassion and/or psychological flexibility. The databases PsycInfo, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus were searched in April 2024, considering the entire available publication period and using specific descriptors. Two independent reviewers selected the studies, with final validation by a senior researcher. Out of 99 records, 12 studies were included. Results Most studies focused exclusively on genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder (GPPPD), particularly provoked localized vulvodynia. There was a notable lack of data on orgasmic and interest/arousal disorders. Samples predominantly included adult, White, heterosexual, presumably cisgender women with higher education and internet access in both committed and casual relationships. There was a low frequency of diagnostic confirmation by professionals, poor delineation of underlying etiologies of GPPPD, and limited consideration of pelvic or vulvovaginal comorbidities that could impact outcomes. Conclusions Future research should ensure broader representation of the Brazilian population. Investigating specific pathologies triggering pain symptoms, as well as the influence of committed partnerships on the manifestation of FSDs, compassion processes, and psychological flexibility, is relevant. Comparative studies on ACT, CFT, and compassion-focused ACT are encouraged, using specific measures related to compassion and psychological flexibility in sexual contexts. Financing No conflict.
