Abstract

Abstract Introduction Female sexual response is a complex process, mediated by neuroendocrine and behavioral interactions, in which the oxytocin and dopamine systems play central roles. Oxytocin is associated with social bonding, pleasure, and sexual behavior, while dopamine is directly related to motivation and reward. Understanding the modulation of these receptors may contribute to the development of therapies for female sexual dysfunction, which remains scientifically underexplored. Using animal models allows for the control of variables and the precise investigation of neurobiological mechanisms. Methodology and Objectives The study will be conducted with sexually experienced adult rats, divided into experimental groups. Each group will receive a different combination of pharmacological modulators of oxytocin and dopamine receptors (specific agonists and antagonists). The animals will undergo standardized behavioral tests to assess sexual receptivity and motivation, such as the partner preference and lordosis tests. After the tests, their brains will be collected for immunohistochemical analysis and neurotransmitter levels in regions such as the hypothalamus and nucleus accumbens. Final Considerations Although both pathways have been individually investigated, there are still gaps in understanding their interaction in the regulation of female sexuality, especially in the context of sexual dysfunctions. In this scenario, the use of animal models becomes an effective strategy for studying, in a controlled manner, the effects of pharmacological modulation of these systems, providing insights for future therapeutic applications in humans.
