Abstract

This chapter examines the concept of leadership. Leaders are visionary, forward-looking, change agents, who plan to inspire a strong sense of purpose in followers. Police leaders have to network not only with colleagues but also with external agencies to maximise their efficiency and effectiveness. Moreover, poor leadership often results in negative outcomes including disenchanted followers, wasted resources and public disapproval, while good leadership offers a sense of purpose, direction and achievement. The chapter discusses the difference between leadership and management before detailing what successful leaders must do to be successful. It then looks into how leaders exercise their authority to carry out tasks, give directions and maintain discipline where necessary.
