Abstract

This chapter shows the importance of the role that the College of Policing has to play in governing the activities of police officers in England and Wales. The Angiolini Inquiry, appointed to look into the Couzens affair, has issued 16 quite revolutionary recommendations relating to ethical policing. The College is responsible for driving through recommendations alongside the National Police Chief’s Council, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice. There are tight deadlines for completion. As a consequence, the College has issued strict guidance for officer compliance. It covers standards of ethical behaviour, leadership, competency, professional practice and decision making. Sergeants and inspectors will have key roles in implementing and embedding initiatives.
