Abstract

This chapter addresses stress on a wide basis. It outlines the biological causes of stress and its positive and negative attributes. It includes workplace stress but also notes that stress can have its origins outside of the workplace. It lists possible stress symptoms, the extent and costs of stress, employee resilience and the responsibilities of employers. Long Covid-19 still exists in the population at large, and some people suffer badly from it. Once known or suspected, long Covid becomes a medical matter. Officers and staff permitted to work with long Covid deserve understanding and practical help where this can be provided. Sometimes people are reluctant to discuss stress or Covid worries or even know, in the instance of Covid, that they have a problem. Sergeant and inspector leaders have a part to play in managing both stress and Covid concerns and the chapter offers positive help in this regard with -detailed checklists.
