Abstract

This chapter recognises supervisory complexities and the difficulties of sustaining a well-motivated, disciplined, ethical and effective team. It offers help on the forming of unhealthy and divisive cliques of officers, ‘banter’ (decried by the Angiolini Inquiry), harassment and bullying, workplace ineffectiveness of a general nature, disciplinary issues and the commission of crime. The chapter also offers assistance in how to deal with personnel problems where the cause is unknown. This involves the sophisticated use of the interpersonal skills. An interview may, for example, result in the revealing of stress or Covid problems, domestic issues affecting work and perhaps more sinister matters including an officer wishing to report instances of crime by a team member.
