Abstract

This chapter explains that problem solving is a vital part of working life as it is an integral part of people's everyday existence. A distinct focus on problem solving in the police service amounts to a critically important leadership skill and activity. Since some problems may be more difficult to resolve, the chapter offers a six-stage approach to solving problems which highlights the importance of established standards. Leaders may prevent problems from arising by training people to do their jobs, checking procedures, being approachable and running regular team meetings. The chapter notes how problems in the workplace take many forms and can relate, for example, to administrative difficulties.
