Abstract

This chapter explores the notion of motivation. It explains motivation as an ingrained feature in people's lives which, it argues, allows them to achieve goals. Thus, sergeant and inspector leaders need to be able to maximise the contributions that team members can make to objectives. However, motivating others proves to be difficult since there are many motivators, and demotivating factors may arise from the home or elsewhere, especially when motivation is not confined to the workplace. The chapter explains how motivated people enjoying their work are likely to help team harmony and synergy. It details the motivation theory wherein leaders must be sensitive to individual and personal conditions.
