Abstract

This chapter explains how discipline is an extrinsic motivator although not a particularly good one because it is imposed. Regardless of the difficulty, misconduct matters must be dealt with promptly and professionally. A leader will know whether a misconduct or disciplinary matter has been resolved satisfactorily when the conditions that caused misconduct in the first place no longer exist. The chapter mentions how weak leadership often invites challenges from team members behaving badly. It covers the ill-disciplined consequences of some bad behaviours and the effects it can have on their work, the performance of colleagues and even members of the public. Some misconduct is so serious that it may end up with a formal misconduct hearing and dismissal from the police service.
