Communications—briefing skills
Abstract
This chapter considers briefing skills in communication under the context of policing. It discusses large-scale briefings resulting from major policing events involving things such as the exercise of democratic rights to protest, rioting, major incidents such as a train crash or ceremonial occasions involving the monarch. A leader will know if they briefed people properly through an examination of the results of whether an operation passes off successfully, although factors other than briefings can affect outcomes. The chapter then details what a leader has to do to carry out an effective briefing. It also tackles the risk of interpretations being different when several briefings are conducted to accommodate a large number of participants.
