Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines the role of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in managing acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers from France, Italy, and Spain compared NIV with standard treatment in 85 patients, measuring the need for endotracheal intubation as the primary outcome. The study demonstrated that NIV significantly reduces intubation rates (26% vs. 74%) and shortens hospital stays (23 vs. 35 days) compared to standard treatment. The study also highlighted the benefits of NIV in reducing complications and improving patient outcomes. The chapter concludes that NIV, particularly using bilevel positive airway pressure, should be integral in treating acute COPD exacerbations, lowering mortality and the need for invasive interventions.
