Albumin for Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in Cirrhosis
Abstract
Abstract This chapter discusses a study that investigates adding intravenous (IV) albumin to standard antibiotic treatment for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with cirrhosis. The study showed that albumin significantly reduced renal impairment and mortality in these patients. The intervention group, which received IV cefotaxime and albumin, showed a lower incidence of renal complications and death compared to the control group, which received only cefotaxime. While the resolution of infection did not differ significantly between the two groups, albumin treatment proved beneficial in preventing severe outcomes. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the need for further studies to determine the optimal dosage and identify the patient subsets that benefit most from this therapy.
