Risk for Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Patients
Abstract
Abstract This chapter presents the Padua Prediction Score, which helps identify medical inpatients at high risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Researchers conducted the study at a university hospital in Padua, Italy; evaluated the efficacy of VTE prophylaxis in high-risk patients; and found that it significantly reduced VTE occurrence. Among high-risk patients, those who received prophylaxis have an 85% lower relative risk of VTE compared to those who did not. The chapter details that bleeding complications are rare, although more patients in the real world receive prophylaxis, which may increase bleeding risks. Finally, it highlights the potential benefits of using the Padua score for individualized VTE risk stratification and recommends prophylaxis for high-risk patients.
