Replacing Indwelling Urinary Catheters for Urinary Tract Infection
Abstract
Abstract This chapter discusses the impact of urinary catheter replacement on patients with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). The underlying study on elderly patients with chronic indwelling catheters showed that replacing the catheter before starting antibiotic treatment leads to faster resolution of both infection and clinical symptoms, with fewer recurrences of bacteriuria. The chapter highlights the importance of obtaining a urine culture from the newly placed catheter before beginning antimicrobial therapy. Patients in the catheter replacement group showed better outcomes, including faster microbiological and clinical improvements, compared to those in the control group. Finally, the chapter affirms that replacing long-term catheters prior to antibiotic initiation aligns with the 2010 Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines for CAUTI management.
