Abstract

Abstract This chapter considers assessment from a clinical practice perspective. Beginning with referral, strategy is discussed in relation to assessment of the behaviours, the child, the family, school, and community. Particular attention is given to practical ways of optimally managing the consultation. This is critical for comprehensive assessment, establishment of a therapeutic relationship, and improved outcomes of care. Varying approaches are required for differences in family structure and dynamics, for example when parents are separated or one parent is not participating. As with symptoms and signs in standard medical practice, behaviour is measurable. Likewise, a systematic approach to the assessment of possible contributing causes can also be undertaken in a standardized and reliable manner. Approaches to assessment which will aid in understanding the causes of behaviour problems include antecedent-behaviour-consequence analysis, analysis of contextual variation, functional assessment, and behaviour diaries. Discussion with the child’s school, and after-school and respite carers is a valuable part of assessment.
