Abstract

Abstract Management of behaviour problems is built on an understanding of causation that inform possible strategy. For this we have proposed a structured diagnostic formulation. On this foundation, management first addresses priorities for the child, particularly child safety and health. This chapter discusses the paediatrician’s role in managing behaviour as a single professional as well as in collaboration with other health and education professionals. It describes a structured approach to measuring outcomes of all management interventions from an objective starting point. The chapter proceeds through descriptions of behavioural approaches informed by Positive Behaviour Support, strategy directed towards the child, their family, and their community, especially school collaborations. Medication approaches are described both in regard to general principles, including the application of individual medications to particular behaviour patterns.
