Abstract

Abstract This chapter addresses the considerations for pre-operative evaluation for VATS lobectomy, beginning with a history and physical exam. The preoperative workup is addressed next, including standard tests including a CT scan of the chest, positron emission tomography (PET scan), and pulmonary function tests (PFTs). With very few exceptions, all patients undergoing anatomic resection should have a diagnosis established before surgery. Further topics include the indications and techniques for preoperative mediastinal lymph node sampling, operative considerations for advanced N2 disease, pre-operative cardiac evaluation, and imaging of the brain.
