Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses strategies of behavior management in correctional settings, noting the challenges of preventing disruptive or health-threatening behavior and proposing a balance of environmental and behavior change strategies. Safety and security are staff intensive; there is no shortcut. Research findings that support important goals of staff training and program structures to maximize outcomes are highlighted. The chapter includes a review of concepts related to behavior management and the creation of behavior management plans. As an example of a structured behavior management plan, attention is drawn to the Egregious Behavior Protocol, an intervention designed to manage high-risk behavior and reduce the likelihood of its occurrence in the future. Important concepts discussed include individual risk factors, contingency management, deterrence, and place management.
