Abstract

Abstract In recent decades, mental health services in jails and prisons have seen many advances in the knowledge base and practice standards. The “Future of Correctional Psychiatry” chapter in the first edition of this textbook expected further progress in these areas, as well as clearer guidance regarding ethical standards for psychiatrists practicing in correctional settings. This chapter discusses developments in these areas since the first edition and briefly summarizes promising new models for correctional settings. It identifies opportunities to expand the evidence base of correctional psychiatry, the need to continue refining practice guidelines, and the role that psychiatry might play in influencing the use of incarceration. As part of their review, the authors describe what they believe the future may hold in store for this subspecialty.
