Inhaled foreign bodies
Abstract
Abstract Foreign body inhalation is a potentially life-threatening condition which requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. The event is frequently unwitnessed, and the presentation varies from acute airway obstruction to persistent cough and wheeze. A high index of suspicion is necessary in a young child with respiratory symptoms. A chest X-ray may reveal a radio-opaque foreign body or the consequences of airway occlusion. Referral to a specialist centre with appropriate skills and equipment is essential. Bronchoscopic removal of foreign bodies is usually possible, with a good outcome. Physiotherapy helps to promote early recovery.
