Abstract

Abstract The spleen’s physiological role in immunological protection and red cell clearance are disturbed in children with red cell membrane disorders and haemoglobinopathies, leading to chronic haemolysis and its consequences. Paediatric haematologists and paediatric surgeons work collaboratively to determine if and when splenectomy is indicated. In addition to realizing the value of splenic preservation, the paediatric surgeon must understand the indications for splenectomy, have technical expertise with both open and laparoscopic techniques, and be aware of its potential complications so they can be prevented or recognized early. They must ensure the family know the precautions to be taken to minimize risks of post-splenectomy infection.
