Abstract

Abstract Visualization of abnormalities of the urinary tract on antenatal scanning are amongst the most common anomalies detected prenatally. Whilst many of these anomalies are minor, accurate prognostication of outcome is difficult in cases where there is more than simple unilateral dilatation. In addition to assessment of the degree of dilatation of the renal tract, it is important to consider the size of the kidneys, the condition of the renal parenchyma, the appearance of the bladder, and the volume of amniotic fluid. All these factors define what antenatal counselling is required, along with providing useful information regarding the underlying pathologies and their prognosis.
