Abstract

Abstract The most common cause of neuropathic bladder is open spina bifida. Management commences immediately after birth and relies mainly on clean intermittent catheterization. All affected children should be monitored throughout childhood for urine infection and renal deterioration. Management is generally directed at protecting the kidneys and eventually gaining bladder control. Whilst primary management is conservative, many patients will require surgical intervention to achieve bladder control and to protect the kidneys. An unsafe bladder must be actively managed, even when this is difficult for the child or family to accept. Control of bowel function is an integral part of management of the neuropathic bladder.
