Abstract

Abstract Management of paediatric burns is challenging, with significant mortality and long-term morbidity. An understanding of the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms allows management to be targeted at the biological factors involved in wound healing. Issues associated with a poor outcome need to be identified and addressed from the outset. Prevention strategies, education on first aid and resuscitation, new dressings, the development of new skin substitutes, a comprehensive team approach, and an understanding of the long-term cosmetic, functional, and psychological outcome have improved the outlook for children who sustain burns.
