Abstract

Abstract This chapter outlines conditions that may present to both paediatric general and paediatric orthopaedic surgeons such as radial club hand, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome, and Down syndrome. It is important that the orthopaedic aspects of the condition are recognized by the general surgeon and that the patient is referred appropriately. Other conditions may be seen from time to time by the paediatric general surgeon, due to the frequency of incidence, such as developmental dysplasia of the hip, Perthes disease, club foot, and scoliosis. Further conditions are included because of the importance of their prompt diagnosis and treatment. These include slipped upper femoral epiphysis, bone and joint infections, and malignancy.
