Paediatric neurosurgery
Abstract
Abstract Infections and illness during pregnancy, and complications during delivery can lead to a variety of neurological insults. Prematurity increases the risk of intraventricular haemorrhage and subsequent hydrocephalus. This chapter covers clinical evaluation, including developmental milestones, hydrocephalus, treatment, head injuries, and a discussion of both airway and ventilatory management and circulatory support and fluid management. It covers congenital and acquired conditions that are commonly seen in paediatric neurosurgical practice. The differences between paediatric and adult presentation, causation, and pathology are important to bear in mind.
