Abstract

Abstract The oral medicine section includes for the reader both descriptions of and commentary on landmark papers in oral medicine. It covers the topics of oral epithelial dysplasia (including histological diagnosis, which is based on a graded assessment of architectural and cytological features), the inherent malignant potential transformation of oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid lesions, the human papilloma virus and its relation to squamous cell carcinoma (including information on Professor Crispian Scully, as well as that HPV-positive OPC is now recognised as a separate biologic, epidemiologic, and clinical disease, characterised by a distinct molecular profile), as well as recurrent aphthous ulceration, and orofacial pain.
