Abstract

Abstract The cleft surgery section includes for the reader both descriptions of and commentary on landmark papers covering the topic of cleft surgery. It looks at the classification of clefts (including lip, alveolus, and palate), cleft treatment-outcome variables (including surgical technique, timing, and sequence), the centralisation of UK cleft services (including the inferiority of UK cleft services when compared to the Eurocleft series of studies across a range of outcomes in other centres in Europe that used a multidisciplinary approach), unilateral cleft lip reconstruction, cleft palate reconstruction, velopharyngeal insufficiency, alveolar bone grafting, maxillary distraction and distraction osteogenesis, and cleft orthognathic surgery.
