Abstract

Abstract This chapter reviews the pharmacological management of common respiratory conditions, focusing on bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antihistamines, and oxygen therapy. It covers ß-2 agonists, antimuscarinics, and theophylline, including their mechanisms, indications, and side effects. Inhaled, oral, and intravenous corticosteroids are discussed in the context of asthma, COPD, and allergic emergencies. Antihistamines are outlined with their sedating and non-sedating profiles, and the role of epinephrine in anaphylaxis is described. The chapter concludes with principles of oxygen therapy in acute and chronic respiratory disease, including target saturations and special considerations. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
