Abstract

Abstract This chapter reviews active and passive immunization, including vaccine types, mechanisms, contraindications, and side effects. It provides a table that outlines the UK immunization schedule and summarizes specific vaccines relevant to Emergency Medicine, including BCG, DTP, Hib, hepatitis A and B, MMR, meningococcal, and pertussis vaccines. The use of immunoglobulins for post-exposure prophylaxis and other indications is discussed, along with considerations for immunization in special populations such as the immunosuppressed, pregnant patients, and those who work in healthcare professions. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
